five poems by Anna Akhmatova

Poems by Anna Akhmatova.    (23June 1889-5 March 1966)

One of the most significant Russian Poets of the 20th Century.   She did, however choose not to emigrate from Russia and lived through the Stalinist years  Her work was stifled by Stalinist censorship and she seems to have written little through the years 1925 to 1936.  Shortlisted for a Nobel Prize in 1965 and runner-up (sorry for that term!) in 1966.

Her style fits well with today: Succinct, subtle varying rhymes and creating depths of emotion and suspected other stories in those few words.

Below are five of her more typical short poems.
